CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Jan. 6, 2023) — A year ago, Jay Brooks stood on the precipice of becoming a rare wire-to-wire winner at the Junior Orange Bowl International golf championships until getting chased down at the end by Nicholas Prieto’s sizzling final 65.

Twelve months later, Brooks was never any closer to the lead than three shots after any round — until Friday.

“Today was exactly the opposite,” marveled the South Florida teen, whose blistering start Friday set the stage for a role reversal and a bit of delayed gratification.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Jan. 5, 2023) — For many a Junior Orange Bowl International golfer coming from outside Florida, one of the toughest adjustments is getting used to the grainy greens seen in the region.

Marco Florioli tried a different remedy for that on Thursday.

“Think less and just play,” said Florioli, who mingled that philosophy with some strong iron play to surge past Puerto Rico’s Kelvin Hernandez and stand 18 holes away from becoming the Junior Orange Bowl’s second Italian boys’ champion in a four-year span.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Jan. 4, 2023) — Kelvin Hernandez and Vincent Stjernfeldt began Round 2 at the Junior Orange Bowl International golf championships with a four-shot cushion over anybody else in the boys’ division.

Within an hour, troublesome starts left each lumped back among the rest of their rivals.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Jan. 3, 2023) — Remi Bacardi can only hope the blueprint that made Nicholas Prieto the Junior Orange Bowl International’s first homegrown champion in more than two decades has another year of shelf life.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Jan. 2, 2023) — Anna Davis can’t help but chuckle whenever she’s at a golf tournament and someone asks if they can get a photo with her.

“It’s so funny to think about,” the California teen said. “A year ago, it was nothing like that.”

Then again, a year ago Davis didn’t own any hardware from Augusta National.

Davis, who last spring surprised her elders by capturing the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, finds herself viewed in a different light this week as she returns to historic Biltmore Golf Club with eyes set on adding the Junior Orange Bowl International trophy to her collection.

Coconut Grove, Fla. (March 11, 2022) -- Last night at Coral Reef Yacht Club in Coconut Grove, Florida, the Junior Orange Board installed Grant Souviron as the organization’s 52nd President.  He leads the team for the 74th annual Junior Orange Bowl Festival, a collection of athletic, artistic and multi cultural events for youth.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Jan. 6, 2022) — Nicholas Prieto knew he’d been making enough birdies to deliver a strong challenge at the Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championships. He just needed to come up with a way to avoid the other end of the ledger. “Just a few too many mistakes,” the Miami teen noted. “The second, third and fourth days were all fairly similar. The only difference is the fourth day I didn’t make any bogeys.”

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Jan. 5, 2022) — Maria Jose Marin spent her first seven holes waiting for something good to happen on the greens during the third round of the 58th Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championships. Good fortune finally came when Marin drained a long birdie attempt at the Biltmore Golf Club’s tough 17th hole. Then she chipped within a foot for a tap-in birdie before making the turn.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (Jan. 4, 2022) — Day 2 of the Junior Orange Bowl International Golf Championships was one of those in which it didn’t take much to make a strong move up the leaderboard – if only you could. A shift in wind direction, combined with a few tougher pin placements, left scoring chances in short supply for the 93 golfers teeing it up at historic Biltmore Golf Club.

The 34th annual Junior Orange Bowl Creative Writing Contest is open for entries from young writers. The theme for this essay competition is "How Can Art and Music Change Our Lives?" This contest is open to eighth graders in South Florida.

Jay Brooks finished his first day with a 6-under-par 65 and a three-shot advantage over his nearest pursuers at historic Biltmore Golf Club.

Emily Zhu is back at historic Biltmore Golf Club this week with the chance to join a highly exclusive circle of two-time Junior Orange Bowl International champions. In a very real sense, though, Zhu’s 2021 triumph already has paid huge dividends. Fair to say the Biltmore will be seeing a lot more of her in the coming years.

Two teams fought their way to the winners circle. In the GIRLS division, the Miami Senior High Stingarees beat the Florida State University Seminoles in the final game 63 to 41. In the BOYS division, the Madison-Ridgeland Academy (MRA) Patriots from Madison, Mississippi beat the Lakota East Thunderhawks from Liberty Township, Ohio with a score of 84 to 65. The 2021 Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic begins today and runs through Thursday with a great roster of teams.

When you train at the same academy with some of the greatest players in tennis, osmosis alone should improve your game. Well, Svit Suljic, already had a solid foundation from his years on courts across Slovenia, so on Monday the sturdy 12 year old displayed a sophisticated all-court attack to overwhelm Colombian baseliner Juan Miguel Bolivar in a 6-3, 6-0 victory to win the Boys’ 12 division of the Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championships on the clay courts of Salvadore Park.

In the all-American Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Girls’ 14s final between 2021 Easter Bowl champions, top-seeded Iva Jokic of Torrance, Calif., rode a critical break at 4-3 of the first set to reel off the final eight games for a 6-3, 6-0 victory over fourth-seeded Shannon Lam of East Brunswick, N.J.

Con 14 años el tenista colombiano se quedó con el primer lugar de uno de los campeonatos de tenis más importantes en la categoría juvenil.

History was also made in the Girls’ 12s final when Lia Belibova, the third seed, was just too consistent for top-seeded Russian Christina Lyutova in a 6-3, 6-1 victory to become the first champion from Moldova to win this Level 2 tournament. She didn’t allow more than four games in six of her seven matches.

Arcila makes history, becoming the first Colombian boy or girl to win this 60-year tournament with a 2-6, 7-6 (5), 3-0 victory when the third-seeded Blanch couldn’t continue after first experiencing a sharp pain in his right knee following the first point of the second-set tiebreaker.
