JUNIOR ORANGE BOWL CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST
The Junior Orange Bowl in partnership with the South Florida Writers Association presents the 33rd annual Junior Orange
Bowl Creative Writing Contest. The contest is open to eighth graders in South Florida. The theme for this essay competition
is "How Has Nature Helped Me in This Time of Pandemic?" Books & Books and Coral Gables Museum are valued
sponsors of the Creative Writing event. The Creative Writing Contest is supported by a generous Community Grant from
the Coral Gables Community Foundation. We thank Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs for their support
of Junior Orange Bowl.
The Junior Orange Bowl Creative Writing Contest is led by Co-Chairs Anthony Broad and Jennifer Forbes with Director
Connie Goodman-Milone. Judging criteria include: attention to theme, originality, and depth of meaning. Essays can be
submitted on the Creative Writing page under Our Events at www.juniororangebowl.org. Each teacher who submits five or
more student essays will be entered into a raffle to win a cash prize of $500 for their school.
Submissions must be received online or postmarked by April 16, 2021. Winning students will receive First Place $750 and
prizes, Second Place $500 and prizes, Third Place $250 and prizes. Winning teachers will receive First Place $350, Second
Place $250, and Third Place $150. Winning essays will be published in the Author's Voice.
The awards ceremony will be a live/virtual event at the Coral Gables Museum on Sunday, May 2, 2021 from 2:00-4:00 pm.
We have a special guest speaker for the awards event. Trey Knight is Assistant Director of Outdoor Adventures, Wellness
& Recreation Department at the University of Miami. Trey will bring his love of the outdoors and its transformative power into
